FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Forest School?

Forest Schools are outdoor, child-led classes that help children connect with nature. Forest School is different from traditional schooling because learning is dynamic and centered around hands-on projects, physical activity and stewardship. Our “school building” is the forest. Children learn about insects, plants, animals, water, the cycles of nature, etc. Through play, kids develop physical, social, and emotional skills that you won’t find in a regular classroom. Risk assessment, resilience, emotional intelligence, deep connection to nature and finding their voice in the world are all important parts of forest school. They will develop problem solving skills, confidence, leadership skills, and gain an incredible sense of achievement.

Do you really stay outside the entire time?

Yes! Even if it rains! Spending time outdoors in all types of weather builds resilience and adaptability in children and adults alike. We learn to reconnect to the cycles of the seasons this way. This is a very important part of learning that your child will do during the session. Together with that, we always give you recommendations about appropriate clothing and gear, like winter weather clothing and rain suits. At any point weather becomes dangerous (low temps or thunder for example) we will either cancel class with notice or call for an early pick up.

Will my child be safe?

Kids that spend more time in nature tend to get injured less than kids that spend a lot of time sitting at desks. They learn the limitations of their bodies through “risky play” like climbing, jumping, and balancing. Kids learn to self assess risks within the safe environment our forest school guides create for them.

In the event a child does get hurt, our teachers are trained in First Aid and CPR, carry cell phones and first aid kits, and our low teacher-to-student ratio allows our teachers to keep a close eye on students at all times. Bumps and bruises are to be expected and we always have first aid kits on hand. If something happens that can’t be fixed with a bandage or some salve, we will contact you immediately. A full report will be taken and caregivers will be notified at the end of the day, if not sooner.
